pet adoption

Puppy Love. Why you should adopt.

Why pet adoption is the way to go.

Pet adoption has many benefits. If you adopt, you get your choice of any age. Though puppies and kittens are cute and cuddly, they can also be a handful. An adult or older pet may be a better fit for you. For example, adopting an adult dog who’s already house-trained and knows basic cues is often much easier than adopting a puppy, who must be taught these things. Animals that are in shelters undergo full physicals when they are brought to a shelter. Of course, many shelters have veterinary clinics on site to treat any medical issues that arise. Likewise, shelter staff makes sure animals are in top-notch shape before they are ready to be adopted into a new home.

1. Saving a life of an animal

This is probably the most rewarding benefit of all with pet adoption. Adopting from a shelter, you are providing an animal with the second chance at life. Not to mention, most of these animals have been rescued from horrible circumstances such as cruelty, neglect and abandonment.  In some cases the owner simply could no longer look after them due to illness or a change in situation.

Staff members at most shelter work tirelessly to nurse animals back to health, rehabilitate disturbed animals, and do everything they possibly can to prepare them for a new home. Unfortunately, not all of them are going to make it to their forever homes. In some cases shelters may have to euthanize due to lack of space, or time is running out. Therefore, re-homing a pet you can give an animal that has been abandoned through no fault of their own a loving, stable home, and help to stop overpopulation.

2. Eradicate Puppy Mills

Nothing is worse than a puppy mill. This is the illegal practice of breeding puppies for the sole purpose of profit. These places have no regard to the dogs’ health or well being. Dogs at puppy farms are often forced to breed several times to their detriment. These animals are kept in terrible conditions without basic necessities. The puppy mill owners have no concern about the health of the dog. It’s all just to make as much profit as possible.

Most of these animals have severe health problems due to the lack of care they receive.  The dogs usually don’t receive any veterinary care, and will often be killed once they can no longer reproduce. Additionally, dogs at pet shops (malls, brick and mortar locations) are often products of puppy farms. Adopting from a shelter aids in stopping dogs from being subjected to such horrific conditions and circumstances. Always choose pet adoption. Purchase your pet from a reputable breeder or shelter and save animals from abuse and serious neglect from puppy farms.

3. Makes you happier

Many studies have shown that a having pet can elongate your life. All the while improving your overall happiness, health, and quality of life. It’s been shown to also assist  people with depression, stress, anxiety and many other ailments. Because, of the affectionate nature of dogs as pack animals that form close relationships with their owners. This is especially helpful for those who suffer from depression, ones who may feel like they don’t have anybody else to turn to.

Its also known that stroking your pet can reduce your blood pressure and stress levels. Playing with your animals can increase the levels of serotonin and dopamine your body produces. This can make you feel calm and relaxed. Likewise, walking your pet is a way to exercise and provides sufferers of anxiety and depression with a reason to leave the house. It also creates opportunities for socializing with other dog walkers. In a lot of ways the animals whose life you save from a shelter, are saving your life as well.

4. Older pets can be great companions

So many people who adopt puppies and kittens without thinking about the huge advantages of having older pets. If they were trained in their previous home they will be less likely to destroy furniture than a younger pet. Not to mention, will more than likely require less supervision. Older pets are often calmer and quite happy to sit in your company rather than demanding constant attention. Likewise, these older animals have more developed personalities than puppies or kittens. Therefore, it may be more apparent when visiting them at the shelter whether or not they are best suited for you.

5. Most of these animals are already house trained

Another pet adoption win is because, animals at shelters have often been house trained in their previous home.  This saves you a lot of time and effort when training your new pet where to go to the potty.

6. Save Money

Shelters often microchip, spay, neuter and vaccinate the animals that come into their care. This saves you a lot of money because you don’t have to pay for the procedures yourself. Pet adoption shelters do their best to ensure that the animal you are taking home is healthy. Also, think about the money you save compared to purchasing from a breeder. Prices of adopting a pet from a shelter are far lower than the rates charged by pets stores and breeders.

When you buy a pet, you not only deny a homeless pet a home, you are supporting an industry that profits from the abuse of animals. Puppy and kitten mills (which sell to pet stores) are in business to make a profit, so they produce as many puppies and kittens as fast as possible. These animals are often in ill-health and have problems like poor social skills due to lack of human companionship. As well as, genetic defects due to inbreeding. We can all do our part and help save a life or a defenseless animal.

“Every single pet that is adopted frees shelter staff up to work with and prepare the next pet for potential adoption,” said Kenny Lamberti, director of strategic engagement and companion animals for the Human Society.
